Countryside Cup: A Huge Success

A big thank you must go out to all the players, teams, staff and fans that attended our Countryside Cup event on Sunday; it wouldn’t have happened with out you. A thank you must also go to the Playing Field Committee who continue to support The Reds on their journey, as well as Stuart and Rebecca Mayhew from Old Hall Farm for supplying the meat for the BBQ. The event proved popular and a lot of money was raised for the club.

Now onto matters on the pitch, Hingham pulled out last minute and the reformed Bunwell were kind enough to fill in on short notice to allow the tournament to go ahead.

Our witness report:

Woodton opened the Countryside Cup with a superb 3-0 win over Viking Reserves. The Reds dominated the play and possession which limited their opponents to long balls that were easily dealt with by Muir, Meaney & Mattos at the back. Ethan Mortimer opened the scoring with a very well taken goal and was later denied a second from a stunning volley. Last added a second with a long distance screamer into the top corner and Swatman rounded it all off with a cool finish from a well worked move. Williams and R.Brown came on to great effect with Piggin his usual excellent self and a very good debut from Gooch.

The second fixture saw a 2-0 reverse at the hands of Bunwell. The Reds never really got into their stride in the first half and although they improved in the second it was not enough to get back in the game. There were still some very good performances; Williams was impressive in midfield and Young in the Woodton goal did well.

Needing a draw or better to qualify for the final, Woodton took on Rackheath Rangers in the final group game. United were the better team and continued to press for a goal which seemed destined not to arrive. Chances created by good work from Nelson and later Mitchell unfortunately didn’t result in a goal. At the other end Woodton looked defensively strong and Meany having been pressed into a defensive role after a last minute squad change performed very well alongside Mattos and Muir. Injuries to Gooch and Piggin meant enforced changes but all did well. In the last minute Rackheath pushed for a winner sending their keeper up for a corner, who produced a good header which Young did very well to save before Meaney cleared and Last calling on his last reserves of energy burst forward to run the ball into an empty net for a deserved 1-0 win.

The final against Bunwell was going to be a tough game. The Reds rallied and found reserves of energy beyond the norm. The game was even when Bunwell scored a stunning volley from 20 yards to give them the lead. Woodton players were giving everything and further injuries to Gooch and Swatman made life even harder for the Reds. Woodton battled on with Piggin, Last and Williams winning the midfield battle and Nelson and R.Brown causing problems wide. With legs tiring Head Coach Darren Mortimer replaced Mitchell as the final member of the squad for the final ten mins and his extra height caused some concerns for Bunwell and the Reds had three or four chances to equalise. Pushing hard for the leveller Woodton were vulnerable to counter attacks and against the run of play Bunwell scored a second to finish of the Reds efforts and a 2-0 loss. The progress made by Woodton was evident to all who watched, the commitment, skill and quality of the team is encouraging for the season ahead.
